Dear Parents,

Our seventh graders will receive their Confirmation on May 8th at 5:30pm in the church. When children receive confirmation, the third sacrament of initiation, they are showing that they are responsible, prepared individuals who are ready to become full-fledged members of the Catholic faith. They renew the vows their sponsors made for them when they were baptized. The bishop anoints the confirmandi with chrism accompanied by the words "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit". This reaffirms the graces of the Holy Spirit conferred on the child at baptism. We offer our congratulations to all the candidates who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation next Friday. Please keep the seventh graders in your prayers as they prepare for this special day.

Parent Tuition Agreement and Parent Participation Requirements: Last week, returning kindergarten through seventh grade families received the Parent Tuition Agreement and the Parent Participation Requirements for the 2015-2016 school year. Please complete both sides of the form and return them to us by the deadline, Friday, May 8th.

Online Surveys: Thank you to all who took the time to complete the surveys in last week's letter. Of the 33 people who responded to the survey concerning extending the day, 69% agreed with the idea. There were a few responses that suggested the addition of 10 minutes happen at dismissal. We would now like your input on that option. Please click here to complete this survey.

At this time, we also ask that you take a moment to complete the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Parent Survey. This survey is a necessary and important part of the process of school accreditation. The results from the survey are electronically collated and the results will be incorporated into our next WASC study.

If you have not already done so, please also consider completing the middle school iPad Program survey.

We thank you in advance for your valuable input.

PLEY: Pley is a rent-play-return subscription service which enables kids, parents, and fans to test out Lego sets without committing to buying sometimes expensive collections. As a school fundraiser, STM is one of a handful of schools who are benefiting from the rent-play-return subscription service as the school will receive $10 for every subscription. Pley subscriptions are available at three levels: $15, $25, and $39 per month, depending on the size of Lego set desired. Pley offers free shipping both ways and doesn't charge for up to 15 lost pieces. If you sign up for a no-risk, free trial you can try one Lego set for free. Then you can choose from over hundreds of Lego sets and add them to your queue. After you're finished with the set, return them to get your next set in the queue -- like with Netflix. Each returned Lego set is sorted and weighed and the bricks are cleaned with a sanitizer that is both eco-friendly and child-safe, so the sets are ready for the next user. Pley has shipped more than 75,000 Lego sets from its San Jose warehouse; more than 15,000 families have purchased Pley subscriptions; and more than 15 million bricks have been washed and dried in Pley's eco-cleaning solution. If you have further questions, please direct them to Mrs. White at swhite@smsf.org.

Tomorrow, Thursday, Ms. Nina Russo, Assistant Superintendent makes her annual visit to our school. We look forward to showing her the wonderful work your children do each and every day.

A big thank you to our Parents' Club co-presidents, Jessica and Raquel and their helpers who prepared a wonderful lunch for teachers and staff on Monday. It is definitely nice to be appreciated.

Finally, last Saturday night, five STM 7th graders received cash awards ranging from $100-$150 at the Annual YMI Essay Banquet at St. Peter & Paul Church in San Francisco. Congratulations to Abbie Atkin, Sebastian Bernardo, Adam Kolokotrones, Dylan Limjoco and Isabella Triunfo.

Sincerely,
Marie Fitzpatrick

Dear Parents,

Our second graders will receive their First Holy Communion this Saturday, April 25th at 10:00am in the church. First Holy Communion, the second sacrament of initiation, is usually received at about age seven or eight, about the time when the children are in second grade. Because receiving the Eucharist for the first time is such a special sacrament, assisting your child in preparing to receive First Holy Communion, both by instruction and example, is important. By attending Mass frequently, participating in reconciliation on a regular basis and abiding by Catholic values, we can show children how their relationship with God can become stronger. Eucharist is a celebration of what Jesus did at the Last Supper. The word Eucharist means "to give thanks". When we celebrate this sacrament, we thank God for His many gifts and blessings. All are welcome to join us. Please keep the second graders in your prayers as they prepare for this special day.

Parent Tuition Agreement and Parent Participation Requirements: Returning kindergarten through seventh graders are receiving the Parent Tuition Agreement and the Parent Participation Requirements for the 2015-2016 school year today. Please read them over and then complete both sides of the form and return them to us by the deadline, Friday, May 8th. By returning those forms, we will know that you agree with the Parent Tuition Agreement and that you acknowledge and understand the Parent Participation Requirements for the coming school year.

Parents' Club Nominations: The current Parents' Club is seeking interested parents to take a leadership position as part of the 2015-2016 Parents' Club. We hope you will consider yourself an interested candidate, or if you know of someone else who should be considered, please write that name next to the position you feel appropriate. Your suggestions do not obligate these parents in any way, but only assist us in the selection. Please complete the paper survey you received last week and return it to the school office as soon as possible.

Online Surveys: We are currently assessing our needs for the 2015-16 school year and would love to have some feedback from you, our families. Please take a minute to complete these two brief surveys. One survey is about our middle school iPad Program and the other concerns extending the school day by 10 minutes. We thank you in advance for your valuable input.

Spell-a-thon Money at Work!: Great news!! Thanks to your fantastic fundraising on our spell-a-thon earlier this year, all grades, kindergarten though 8th grade as well as the science lab now have mounted projectors and Apple TV's in their classrooms.

Dear Parents,

Yesterday, our second grade class received the sacrament of First Reconciliation. When we receive this sacrament we find God's unconditional forgiveness for each and every one of us; as a result we are called to forgive others. The peace of mind and soul which this sacrament imparts to us is one for which there is no substitute. It is a peace that flows from a certainty that our sins have been forgiven and that we are right with God. Please keep the second graders in your prayers as they continue their preparation for their First Communion on Saturday, April 25th at 10:00am.

The Parents' Club meet at 7:00 in the library tomorrow, Thursday, April 16th. If you have not yet attended a meeting this year, now is a great time to participate and become involved in YOUR Parents' Club.

Sandwiches-for-the-needy: Thank you in advance to the 3rd and 7th grade students who will take the lead in providing sandwiches for the needy this Friday, April 17th. We ask students in all grades to consider making at least one sandwich. Please remember that in order to facilitate the distribution of sandwiches, we have been asked to provide just one type of sandwich: turkey on sliced white or brown bread.

Congratulations 8th graders: The San Francisco Public Library sponsors an annual Youth Poetry Contest with a specific theme.  The theme of this year's contest was "the Power of Peace".  In response to the contest challenge, the 8th graders composed a collection of contemporary sonnets, in classical Shakespearean rhythm (iambic pentameter) and style (quatrains and couplets), and submitted them to the contest committee.  We are extremely proud to announce that the 8th graders took several awards in this year's contest!  The committee sent us the following note:

"Well, the committee has certainly enjoyed reading your students' poems! The overall quality of their work impressed us greatly. I am pleased to inform you that your class has won TWO overall prizes 1. Highest Class Submissions (6th-8th grade) and 2. The Shakespeare Prize for Best Class Project. I am pleased to inform you as well, that after a very difficult decision we selected four students to represent their class as readers at our grand finale event April 18th, 2-4pm at the SF Main Public Library's Koret Auditorium. The students are: Kevin Dunn:"The Burden of Humanity," Chloe David: "Mending Minds," Isabella Villante: "Equality," and Ava Ragasa: ""Peace Is the Key"

Congratulations to all our participating 8th graders!  The grand finale event is on Saturday, April 18th, 2-4pm, Koret Auditorium, San Francisco Main Public Library. It is FREE and open to all STM students and their families.

Used Ink Cartridges: We continue to receive monies from the company that recycles used ink cartridges. Our last check was $72.00! Keep these donations coming. Every little bit counts!

At this time of the year, teachers of all classes will begin working on the Family Life portion of the Religious Education curriculum. All grades will be using the Benziger Family Life series. We strongly encourage you to use this time to talk with your child about your family's individual views and expectations. Please contact your child's teacher directly if you have any questions about this program.

Sincerely,
Marie Fitzpatrick
