Newsletter for Wednesday, April 26, 2016

Dear Parents,

During the Month of May, a month both named for and dedicated to Mary, Catholics have long honored Mary by placing a crown on her image. The tradition in the United States and many other countries has been for school children to have a "May Crowning" ceremony, with a procession, pretty dresses and a wreath of fresh flowers that are placed on the statue. This Sunday, May 1st, at 10:00am, we invite you all to join with the 2nd and 3rd graders as they present the Family Mass and May Crowning.

This past Saturday, the 2nd grade class was part of a beautiful ceremony marking their First Holy Communion. A big thank you to their teachers, Kathleen Wilkinson and Rory McKillion for preparing such a prayerful and respectful celebration. All 2nd grade students will get to wear their beautiful first communion outfits again when we celebrate the May crowning on Sunday.

When children receive confirmation, the third sacrament of initiation, they are showing that they are responsible, prepared individuals who are ready to become full-fledged members of the Catholic faith. They renew the vows their sponsors made for them when they were baptized. The bishop anoints the confirmandi with chrism accompanied by the words "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit". This reaffirms the graces of the Holy Spirit conferred on the child at baptism. We offer our congratulations to the all candidates who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation Friday evening at 5:30pm. Please remember that all Confirmation candidates will be dismissed at 12:30pm on Friday, April 29th.

Thank you to all who attended the parent mandatory meeting last night. Congratulations to the O'Shaughnessy Family, the winners of the $500 off tuition raffle. It was a very productive evening and we have received a lot of positive feedback about the topics we covered.

School Closed Monday, April 25, 2016

School closed tomorrow - Monday, April 25, 2016
Dear Parents,

Today a pole supporting some electrical wires that cross our schoolyard became loose and now live wires are dangling about 12 feet above the yard. PG&E came and looked at the issue. We have scheduled to have this repaired with a licensed contractor tomorrow.

At this point they have not shut off the power. However, in an abundance of caution, I believe it is safer to keep the school closed until this has been fixed. Therefore school will be closed, tomorrow, Monday, April 25th. We plan on resuming on Tuesday, 26th according to the regular schedule.  Practices in the gym have also been canceled.

Sincerely,

Marie Fitzpatrick

Dear Parents,

Our second graders will receive their First Holy Communion this Saturday, April 23rd at 10:00am in the church. Eucharist is a celebration of what Jesus did at the Last Supper. The word Eucharist means "to give thanks". When we celebrate this sacrament, we thank God for His many gifts and blessings. All are welcome to join us. Please keep the second graders in your prayers as they prepare for this special day.

Catholic Schools in collaboration with parents and guardians as the primary educators, seek to educate the whole child by providing an excellent education rooted in Gospel values. To that end ask that you take the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Parent Survey. Thank you to the 37 families that have previously completed the survey. If you have not had the chance to complete this survey, please do so by today. It is important that we receive more responses in order to help us grow in our Catholic Faith. Your input is valuable.

Sandwiches-for-the-needy: Our next sandwiches-for-the-needy collection is this Friday, April 22nd with the 7th and 3rd graders taking the lead. We encourage all of you to consider making an extra sandwich and/or lunch and sending it to the office on that day.

Outdoor Education: It is a little less noisy in the homes of fifth and sixth graders as well as here at school. The fifth and sixth graders' are away on their Outdoor Education Program. They will be back on Friday, near dismissal time, tired, dirty but full of stories of the fun and education they experienced.

A few months ago the  City & County of San Francisco did construction work along Brotherhood Way from Thomas More Way to St. Charles Ave.  The work involved constructing curb ramps and sidewalk to make the pedestrian pathways safer and more accessible.  The next proposed project to enhance the safety of this area is The Brotherhood Way Tunnel Lighting Project at the Junipero Serra overpass. Please read this flyer. If you live in District 7 please cast your vote to support this worthy cause and will ensure the continued safety of our children.

At this time of the year, teachers of all classes will begin working on the Family Life portion of the Religious Education curriculum. All grades will be using the Benziger Family Life series. We strongly encourage you to use this time to talk with your child about your family's individual views and expectations. Please contact your child's teacher directly if you have any questions about this program.

Sincerely,
Marie Fitzpatrick
