Dear Parents,

Please continue to keep the people of France and all those affected by the recent terrorist attack in your thoughts and prayers. It is important to speak to your children about the tragedy in an age appropriate manner. Remind them that love is always stronger than hate and teach them to appreciate our similarities as well as our differences. We are all God's children.

As Thanksgiving approaches we have much for which we are thankful. It is a time of year when we think of others less fortunate. Your generous response to our peanut butter collection is a wonderful sign of your thoughtfulness and a great example for your children of giving to the local community. As a reminder, we are collecting peanut butter for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
PEANUT BUTTER FRIDAY: If we reach our goal of 600 jars of peanut butter by Friday, December 11th, the student body will enjoy free dress on Friday, December 18th. Please send a jar (or two!), any kind, any size with your child by the deadline.
Current count: 236! (That's 76 MORE than what we had collected at this time last year!)
SANDWICHES FOR THE NEEDY: This Friday, November 20th, is our next collection of sandwiches-for-the-needy. All are welcome to participate and the 2nd and 8th graders and are charged with taking the lead that day. We thank you in advance for what we hope will be another huge collection for those at the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality.

STREAM SHOWCASE: Today was the last Fall STREAM class for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Please consider joining us tomorrow, Thursday, November 19th in the gym from 1:00-2:00pm for the STREAM Showcase. STREAM students (6th, 7th and 8th grade) should wear dressy clothes to school tomorrow as part of their presentation.

FROM THE DAD'S CLUB: Please join the Dads' Club for an upcoming barbecue on Sunday, November 22th, at noon in St. Thomas More's Carrol Hall. Enjoy fantastic food and delicious local San Francisco beer as you cheer on our own San Francisco 49ers!. Come unwind and relax! Email your RSVP to vilaska.nguyen@gmail.com.

MINIMUM DAYS: Next week's schedule leaves us with only two short days of school. Monday, November 23rd, being the 4th Monday of the month, is a minimum day. A pizza lunch will be available for purchase by those attending extended care that day. Please remember that next Tuesday, November 24th we begin our Thanksgiving break with minimum day dismissal, 12:15/12:30. Extended Care will be available. School will resume on Monday, November 30th.

We won't be here to do a Wednesday newsletter next week, however, we will send home the relevant flyers we receive for distribution on Tuesday.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Sunday, December 6th - Family Mass 10am
Presentation of the First Communion and Confirmation Candidates

Holiday Fair and Pancake Breakfast!
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: Over the past year I have been meeting with school principals and church leaders along the Brotherhood Way corridor. With the support of the City's Neighborhood Empowerment Network (NEN) we are in the final stages of developing a Resilient Brotherhood Way Action Plan. The purpose of this plan is to build a community that is a safe and connected neighborhood that is well positioned to respond and recover from a disaster and look out for the needs of our most vulnerable residents. The Resilient Neighborhood movement grew out of the disaster in New Orleans where the city was unable to help all its residents because of the magnitude of the disaster. Neighborhoods realized that they needed to be able to help themselves, especially in the first 72 hours following a major event such as Hurricane Katrina.

The schools and preschools on Brotherhood Way serve over 900 children on a regular basis. While each of our schools has developed its own individual disaster plan we need to be prepared to partner with surrounding communities in the wake of a severe disturbance where local infrastructures are damaged and we are required to tend for the children in our care for several hours or even days.

Included in your envelope today is a card from the city to help you and your family plan for a disaster. Check out their website at http://www.sf72.org/home.

Consider also signing up for AlertSF. Get alerted about emergencies and other important community news by signing up for their Emergency Alert Program. This system enables them to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. You will receive time-sensitive messages wherever you specify, such as your home, mobile or business phones, email address, text messages and more.

We are looking for volunteers to be part of our preparedness plan. Let us know if you are interested in helping develop our plans, be involved in training or assisting in any other way. Individuals who have taken NERT training or who are interested in taking the training to help our school community would be invaluable.  Please contact me if you are interested in being part of a Disaster Preparedness Group at STM.
CHRISTMAS STOCKING RAFFLE: Check out the flyer in today's envelope for information on how to win a GIGANTIC Christmas stocking filled with toys and games! Good Luck!

SANTA'S SECRET SHOP: The Parents' Club will present their annual Santa's Secret Shop starting on Thursday, December 3rd. All the students will have an opportunity to purchase gifts for parents, friends and relatives. More information will go home after the Thanksgiving break.
PARENTS CLUB MEETING/SANTA'S SECRET SHOP PREVIEW: Please consider joining us for our next Parents' Club meeting on Thursday, December 3rd in the library. Also in the gym, from 5:30pm-7:30pm is our Santa's Secret Shop Preview. Come check out the fun gifts and special items available for purchase! Enjoy festive treats and cookies as well as hot chocolate, eggnog, wine and beer. The Athletic Board will also be there to sell bronco gear, sweatshirts, t-shirts, pencils, folders, and license plates.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM: Please save Thursday night, December 10th, for our school's presentation of our Christmas Program. We will begin at 7:00pm in the Church and all students, preschool through 8th grade will have a part in this program.

NO-FUSS FUNDRAISING: Don't forget to keep sending in all your Boxtops for Education and Campbell Soup labels. These can be turned in for cash which we use to buy extra supplies for the classrooms.

CIOPPINO: Please mark your calendars for our 24th Annual Cioppino Dinner Dance and Silent Auction on Saturday, February 20th. The evening includes appetizers, antipasto, salad, garlic bread, cioppino (or chicken if you prefer), dessert, balloon prizes and a fabulous auction. Babysitting is also available on site! Check out the flyer you are receiving today. ONLINE RESERVATIONS are also accepted!

As we come to the day when we recognize all for which we should be thankful, we are especially mindful of you. You continue to support so many of our efforts by your presence and participation. These efforts have continued for years. Thank you, thank you, thank you and enjoy a great holiday with family and friends!

Sincerely,

Dear Parents,

As we move towards the holiday season, we want our students to continue to 'Be the Hands of God' by participating in our annual collection of peanut butter. Our collection this year, lead by the first graders, will benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has requested peanut butter, as it is a much-needed nutritious staple for them throughout the holiday season. Last year's collection was so successful, that the students brought in over 500 jars in just 4 weeks. This year, our collection, which starts tomorrow, November 12th, will also run over four weeks so our goal as a school is to collect 600 jars! If we reach our goal of 600 jars of peanut butter by December 11th, the student body will enjoy free dress on Friday, December 18th. Please send a jar (or two!), any kind, any size with your child by Friday, December 11th.

This Friday, November 13th, is our next collection of sandwiches-for-the-needy. All are welcome to participate and the 5th and 1st graders and are charged with taking the lead that day. In order to facilitate the distribution of sandwiches, we have been asked to provide just one type of sandwich: turkey on sliced white or brown bread. We thank you in advance for what we hope will be another huge collection for those at the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality.

We are in the home stretch of our STREAM classes, and the 6th, 7th and 8th graders are enthusiastically engaging in some wonderful learning experiences. Please consider joining us on Thursday, November 19th in the gym from 1:00-2:00pm for the STREAM Showcase.

SCRIP: Start your Christmas shopping now! Order your scrip by 6am on Friday November 13th and receive it next Wednesday, November 18th, the last day to receive gift cards before Thanksgiving break.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Friday, November 20th
Boba Sale - orders due by dismissal, tomorrow, Thursday, November 12th
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM: Please save Thursday night, December 10th, for our school's presentation of our Christmas Program. We will begin at 7:00pm in the Church and all students, preschool through 8th grade will have a part in this program.

DECEMBER 6TH: Mark December 6th on your calendar as an exciting day here at STM. We will begin the day with the presentation of our First Communion and Confirmation candidates at our 10:00am Family Mass, followed by the Holiday Fair, a Pancake Breakfast presented by the 7th and 8th grade dads, and a visit with Santa in the gym.

8TH GRADE RECOMMENDATIONS: This is the time of the year when 8th graders are busily writing their high school essays and completing their applications. Because of changing demographics many families attend church in Parishes other than where their school is located. Please remember that students will need to have their clergy recommendations signed by the pastor in the parish where they attend Mass and other church services. This will ensure that recommendations are written by a pastor who knows your child and who is familiar with your family's involvement in your local church. Please note that all recommendation forms will go directly to Mrs. Girlich. She will then distribute them to the appropriate staff members.

COLLEGECARE: Need a babysitter or an extra pair of hands to help with the kids? CollegeCare connects you with local college student babysitters, on demand. CollegeCare has a wide range of babysitters from a local university majoring in various degrees. The majority of their staff are nursing students who are highly qualified with CPR and other certifications along with extensive clinical hours. Check them out today!

ALMAVIA: AlmaVia is currently looking for passionate people to join their fantastic group of care-givers. They have full, part-time and on-call positions available in both their Assisted Living and Memory Care Departments. AlmaVia is also looking for someone to fill a part-time position in their Spiritual Care Department. They offer a very competitive benefit package which includes health, dental, vision and generous paid time off. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please drop by their front office for an application, or call Marcy Bahr at 415-337-1339.

As the weather becomes colder and hopefully wetter, please be sure to send your child to school with a warm coat or jacket. While we understand that it may be raining upon drop-off and pick-up, we strongly suggest your child does not bring an umbrella to school. Often the strong winds and heavy rain make the umbrellas difficult to use, especially for the younger children. Dripping umbrellas also make our floors more slippery and unsafe.

It was great to have you join us for parent conferences last week. We are very proud of all our students and are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in their education.

Sincerely,

Dear Parents,

Last Sunday we began the month of November with the Feast of All Saints (November 1st) and All Souls (November 2nd). November is traditionally dedicated to those who have died and "have gone to their rest believing in Jesus Christ" (Eucharistic Prayer II). The month of November also draws to an end the liturgical calendar of the church. Throughout the month, scripture readings at mass reminds us of the last days, culminating with the Feast of Christ the King on November 24th.

We hope your parent-teacher conferences are going well. The teachers always look forward to meeting with you and sharing the good news about your child's progress. Once again, our school showed very healthy IOWA test results with the majority of students scoring at or above the 75th percentile. Just a reminder that every day this week is a minimum day, with dismissal at 12:15pm for grades K-3 and 12:30pm for grades 4-8.

PENNY BUCKET CHALLENGE: Last Friday marked the last day of the Student Council's "Penny Bucket" challenge. The class who collected the most pennies, weighing in at 220.5 lbs, and the winners of pizza party is 3rd grade.

2nd place - 1st grade with 209 lbs
3rd place - 4th grade with 132 lbs
4th place - 2nd grade with 108 lbs
5th place - Kindergarten with 64 lbs
6th place - 8th grade with 52 lbs
7th place - 6th grade with 41.5 lbs
8th place - 7th grade with 39 lbs
9th place - 5th grade with 32.5 lbs

As a school, this year, we almost doubled our collection from last year (537 lbs) for a total of 898.5 lbs of pennies (which is almost $1,500) to be donated to the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund. A BIG thank you to everyone who participated in donating pennies for this great cause.
PANORAMIC PICTURE:  Lifetouch, our school picture company, will come this Friday, November 6th to take this picture of all students, preschool through 8th grade, as well as all faculty and staff in our gym at 10am. For the eighth year running, we are offering a 10"x30" panoramic student body picture for purchase. If you are interested in purchasing one, please return the order form you received last week with your child no later than this Friday, picture day. Panoramic photos are pre-pay only and additional items cannot be ordered later. The original pictures from the last seven years are on display here in the school office. Drop by and check them out!
UPCOMING EVENTS
PARENTS' CLUB MEETING: Please come and join us for our monthly meeting tomorrow night, November 5th at 7pm in the Library.
BOBA SALE: Please use the form in today's envelope to order a boba drink for November 20th. All proceeds from this sale will benefit the 5th and 6th grade Outdoor Education program.
