August 18, 2021

Dear STM Families,

Just one more week until we welcome our students back for a new school year!

We are so excited and look forward to seeing the many eager faces, the few reluctant newcomers, and hearing of the highlights of summer vacations and staycations. Know that we have worked diligently to prepare for their return while continuing to follow and/or update many of the protocols put in place last year. The continued safety of our students and our staff is always our highest priority.

All individuals, including staff and students over the age of two, should wear face coverings over both their nose and mouth while at school/on-campus both indoors and outdoors. Snack time and lunch will be outside in the schoolyard if weather and air quality permit. Classroom doors and windows will remain open during the school day to provide ventilation. New air filters have been installed in classroom air purifiers for the new school year.

All students and staff are asked to conduct health screenings at home. Families are no longer required to show a health check at drop-off. Please keep children at home if they are ill or showing any symptoms that may be related to Covid-19.

Please note that drop-off and pickup times will continue to be staggered and have been adjusted for the 2021-2022 school year. Younger siblings may follow older students' morning drop-off and dismissal times.

Please drop students off in the white zone. STM staff members will be on traffic duty to supervise morning drop-off. Students will walk straight to their classrooms upon arrival. Parents and other adults are not allowed in the schoolyard as we continue to limit visitors to our campus. We will not conduct outside morning assemblies for the moment.

SEISMIC RETROFIT COMPLETED!

The second, and largest, phase of the seismic upgrade has been successfully completed and our main school building is now up to current life safety standards for the city of San Francisco. Along with the seismic work, we completely renovated the restrooms and got new flooring throughout. We can't wait for the students to see the new upgrades.

COVID-19 MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE, 2021-2022

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has issued updated Guidance for TK-12 Schools regarding returning for the 2021-2022 school year. The following are the key messages in their guidance:

Key Messages

  • As of August 3, 2021, 77% of eligible San Franciscans were fully vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccination of staff, eligible students, and household members is one of the most effective ways to decrease the risk of COVID-19 in schools. Vaccinated staff family members, and eligible students also help protect younger children who are not yet eligible for vaccination.

  • The past year has reinforced the importance of in-person attendance to students' physical and mental health as well as their learning, Measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 must consider and prioritize students' access to safe and full in-person instruction, keeping them in school as much as possible and limiting unnecessary missed days at school.

  • The risk of transmission in schools is low. Schools provide layers of prevention, in a structured, supervised setting where everyone must follow COVID-19 precautions. As a result, the risk of COVID-19 in schools is often lower than outside of school. During the past school year, San Francisco had seven cases of COVID transmission with in-person learning among 48,000 students and teachers, including during the height of the winter COVID-19 surge. SFDPH recommends that families with concerns consult with their child's doctor before deciding not to send their child to school.

VACCINATIONS FOR COVID-19

As stated in the above message from the SFDPH, one of the most effective ways to decrease the risk of COVID-19 in schools is the vaccination of staff, eligible students, and household members.

  • As required by the State of California all employees have completed the Certification of Vaccine Status.

  • While Covid-19 vaccination is not mandatory for eligible students, we ask you to consult with your children's primary care physician to be informed on how best to protect your child.

  • We encourage vaccination of all eligible adults in your household.

All volunteers, including coaches, will need to show proof of vaccination.

Statement on Distance Learning/Hybrid Learning

for the 2021/2022 School Year

The Archdiocese of San Francisco does not intend to offer distance learning or hybrid models of instruction for the 21-22 school year. Schools may accommodate a student who has pre-existing, documented medical conditions on a case-by-case basis, providing the school has the resources for such an accommodation, and the accommodation would benefit the student's spiritual, social, emotional, and academic growth in addition to their physical safety.

Students who are home due to COVID quarantine protocols for exposure or positive test results, will be provided a learning solution by the local school administration until the student is permitted to rejoin live, in-person instruction.
