STM Newsletter for May 29, 2013

Dear Parents:

As May draws to a close, we reflect on its association with Mary. During this special month, in which we celebrated Christ’s Ascension into Heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we are reminded to always keep Mary in our hearts. As we carry on through the year, we should continue to develop a deep personal relationship with Mary – one of love, affection, devotion and trust, so that she always has an important place in our lives. Let’s all try to take some practical steps such as praying the Rosary or maybe saying a special prayer like the Memorare throughout the year, not just during May, to deepen our devotion to Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Queen of Peace, so as we pray, we offer our prayers for peace in our city and throughout the world.

Sandwiches-for-the-needy: Just a reminder that our final collection of sandwiches-for-the-needy is this coming Friday, May 31st. We ask that all grades pull together to provide sandwiches that day. Thank you once again to all who have supported these collections throughout the year.

STM Newsletter for May 22, 2013

Dear Parents:

As the year draws to a close, we reflect back on the school year and our theme, ‘Let’s THINK like Jesus’. Students in all grades participated in many fundraisers and community awareness programs and learned more about how they can make a difference in the lives of others, all the while thinking like Jesus did. Our students showed their charity throughout the year by collecting toiletries for the Blue Star Moms to distribute to troops and veterans and providing sandwiches for the needy for the Martin de Porres House. Seventh grade spearheaded an extremely successful Confirmation service project, Develop Africa in which they collected nearly 700 school supplies and nearly $650 for children in Africa. Together, as a school, we raised over $450 during Lent for the Holy Childhood Association. We hope that with your continued support, next year there will be many opportunities for you and your child to be involved in a variety of similar service projects.
Our final collection of sandwiches-for-the-needy will be next Friday, May 31st and we ask that all grades pull together to provide sandwiches that day. Thanks to all who have supported these collections throughout the year.

Dance FestivalTomorrow evening we will celebrate our own Dancing with the Stars. Your children will be the stars of our annual Dance Festival. The front doors of the school will open at 6:15pm to allow students to enter their classrooms. Students arriving early should line up on the sidewalk (NOT on the school front steps) and wait in an orderly manner until the school doors open at 6:15. Students should arrive no later than 6:30pm. Parking will be available in the schoolyard beginning at 5:45pm. The doors of the gym will open at 6:15pm. A list of the suggested clothing your child should wear was sent home last week. As you know, our dance program, under the direction of Sue Rissotto, is an enriching and enjoyable experience for all students. We look forward to seeing you all at this most popular event of the year.

During Spirit Week, we are choosing to show and share the spirit of THINKing like Jesus to those around us. STM Newsletter for May 15, 2013

Dear Parents,

This Sunday, the church will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church and the gift of the Holy Spirit – the sending of the Holy Spirit by our Lord Jesus Christ. Having been with his disciples for forty days after the resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. Pentecost closes the Easter Season. It celebrates the overwhelming experience of God giving the Holy Spirit to the first community of believers in the church. The color of the vestments and decorations for Pentecost is red, which symbolizes the intense love and fire of the Holy Spirit. From now until the beginning of the Advent Season we will celebrate the church season known as Ordinary Time. We now see the return of the green vestments that are a symbol of life and growth in the church.

We trust everyone enjoyed the special three-day-weekend as we return to the full and exciting next few weeks at STM. Only 18 days to go!

Parents’ Club: St. Thomas More School has a wonderful tradition of parental involvement. Our Parents’ Club is tremendously supportive each school year with events that include the Fall Carnival, Christmas Festival, and the famous Cioppino Dinner. The Parents’ Club’s next meeting is tomorrow night at 7:00pm in Carroll Hall. If you have not already attended a meeting this year, now is your chance to get involved with your school.

Endangered Species Day: On Friday, May 17th, during morning recess, the STM Ecology Club will be selling pins to raise awareness for the many endangered species right here in San Francisco Bay Area. Many, many animals world wide are on the Endangered Species Act's list - from butterflies such as the Monarch to bigger animals such as the Sumatran tiger. However, right here close to home, there are other species in grave danger of becoming extinct. STM strives toward stewardship of the earth and that also INCLUDES doing what we can to take care of our native wildlife such as the delicate Western Snowy Plover birds you may see at Ocean Beach, the Bay Checkerspot Butterfly that USED to live on Twin Peaks in SF and one of the "most beautiful serpents in North America”, the Garter Snake. All species play an integral part in our ecosystem. Remembering to recycle and dispose of trash properly, wise water usage and restoring native marshes and habitats are some of the ways we can help. The pins will be sold for 50¢ and can be worn all day. Help us raise monies to go towards programs that work hard to assist our San Francisco Wildlife.

Afternoon Extended Care: Beginning this coming Monday, May 20th, parents who use the after schoolExtended Care program will need to either pre-pay or pay-by-the-day. Prepayments may be made in the office or when you pick up your child from extended care. The cost is $4.00 per hour or fraction-thereof. Any unused balance from a pre-payment will be applied to next years’ billing.

Field Trips: Today the 8th graders are receiving a permission slip for their end-of-year graduation picnic at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. Kindergarten students are also receiving permission slips for their upcoming Academy of Sciences field trip on Wednesday, June 5th. Please pay close attention to the due dates!

Dance Festival: Next Thursday, May 23rd, we will celebrate an evening of our own Dancing with the Stars. Your children will be the stars of our annual Dance Festival. The front doors of the school will open at6:15pm to allow students to enter their classrooms. Students arriving early should line up on the street (NOT on the school front steps) and wait in an orderly manner until the school doors open at 6:15. Students should arrive no later than 6:30pm. Parking will be available in the schoolyard beginning at 5:45pm. The doors of the gym will open at 6:15pm. Again today you are receiving a list of the suggested clothing your child should wear. As you know, our dance program, under the direction of Sue Rissotto, is an enriching and enjoyable experience for all students. We look forward to seeing you all at this most popular event of the year.

2013 Yearbook: This year’s Yearbook is almost here! All students PK-8th grade are included in this wonderful keepsake book produced under the direction of our Tech Coordinator, Becky Wong. As always we expect a sellout again this year. The order form for the book is in your Envelope today.

Spirit Week: The Student Council has included information about Spirit Week, which begins on Tuesday, May 28th with Pajama day.

From the Athletic Board: Thank you to everyone who participated in the hoop-a-thon. We raised over $2000 for the athletic board! Check out the knock-out flyer in today’s envelope. This fun contest is open to all 3rd through 8th graders. The entry fee is only $5! The knock-out competition will be held on Friday, May 31st beginning at 12:30pm in the gym. We invite all to join us for this fun event followed by the Sports Appreciation Awards.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that we will have very little changes in staff for the new school year, however, we will be doing some juggling, from last year to this, of the roles some faculty will play.

Retiring from the classroom is our beloved 8th grade teacher, Zodine Spiegel, who arrived at St. Thomas More School in 1980. During her time here Zodine has seen 32 classes graduate. When alumni come back to STM, years after graduating, their first question is always “Can I visit Mrs. Spiegel?” This is a true testament to the many lives Zodine has touched throughout the years. Zodine’s enthusiasm for teaching and creative projects will always be remembered by many previous eighth grade students. On behalf of the countless students who you have guided and nurtured, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Taking over the reins in eighth grade will be our Vice Principal, Natalia Girlich while John Kavanagh moves to a permanent classroom teacher position, taking 7th grade. John will continue to teach algebra to the 8thgrade students. Joining the teachers on the first floor as the new 3rd grade teacher is Julianne Beach. She will trade classrooms with Jessica Bryan, who will make the move upstairs as the new 6th grade teacher. It is wonderful to have such a flexible and highly skilled faculty who are eager to extend their knowledge and experiences in different grades.

Plans are well underway for another great year.

Sincerely,

Marie Fitzpatrick

STM Newsletter for May 8, 2013

Dear Parents,

During the Month of May, a month dedicated to Mary, Catholics have long honored Mary by placing a crown on her image. The tradition in the United States and many other countries has been for school children to have a "May Crowning" ceremony, with a procession, pretty dresses and a wreath of fresh flowers that are placed on the statue. Thank you to our 2nd grade teacher, Claudia Heikel and 7th grade teacher, Natalia Girlich for preparing a beautiful May Crowning ceremony during Family Mass last Sunday. A special thank you also to all the 2nd and 7th grade students who participated in such a lovely tradition.

This past Mondaywe had two special guests from the Herbst Foundation visit our school and have lunch with the faculty – Tony Cameron and Shirley Costello. Mr. Cameron surprised Julianne Beach, our 6thgrade teacher, by presenting her with the Herbst Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. Along with this award of distinction, both Julianne and the school received sizeable checks to continue the work of education here at St. Thomas More School. St. Thomas More School has more teachers honored for excellence in education than any other school serving any age level in the Bay Area. In addition to Julianne, our previous winners are Sue Kapovich (2010), Zodine Speigel (2008), Marie Fitzpatrick (2003), and Shelley White (2003). We are truly blessed to have such excellent teachers here at STM.

It is a little less noisy in the homes of fifth and sixth graders as well as here at school. The fifth and sixth graders’ are away on their Outdoor Education Program. They will be back Friday, near dismissal time, tired, dirty but full of stories of the fun and education they experienced.

Sandwiches-for-the-needy: Thank you in advance to the 2nd and 7th grade students who will take the lead in providing sandwiches for the needy this Friday. We ask students in all grades to consider making at least one sandwich. Our last collection for the school year is scheduled for May 31st when we ask ALL grades to take the lead in providing sandwiches. Please remember the following guidelines to help with the distribution of sandwiches - Individually wrap the sandwiches (ziplock sandwich bags) and label what is included. This helps people with allergies and dietary restrictions.

Don’t forget that this coming Monday, May 13th, is a holiday for all students, preschool through eighth grade. School will resume on Tuesday.

Father-Daughter Dance: LAST CHANCE! This fun and special event for dad’s and their daughters is this Saturday, May 11th. This is always a well-attended event. Reservations are still being accepted. Check out the flyer you are receiving today if you are interested.
Scrip Requirement: We are grateful to all of the families who have completed this requirement for the 2013-2014 school year. As of May 1st, any scrip purchases will be credited to the next school year, 2013-2014. All families are being notified today as to whether or not they have fulfilled this requirement. All balances will need to be in order by the end of this month.

Extended Care: A Reminder…Beginning Monday, May 20th, parents who use the after school Extended Care program will need to either pre-pay or pay-by-the-day. Prepayments may be made in the office or when you pick up your child from extended care. The cost is $4.00 per hour or fraction-thereof. Any unused balance from a pre-payment will be applied to next years’ billing.

Dance Festival: The date is drawing near for our annual Dance Festival. It will be held Thursday evening, May 23rd. As you know many of our dances are partner dances and Mrs. Rissotto spends a lot of effort preparing the children for this. If your child is unable to attend, please let the office know immediately in writing. It is very upsetting if on the night of the festival a child is not able to perform a dance because his or her partner does not show up. If we do not hear from you, we expect your child will be participating. Mrs. Rissotto has also included a list of suggested clothing for the night in today’s envelope.

Physics Day at Great America: Science is a Physics Affair! Last Friday, three roller coasters were entered into Great America's Physics Day roller coaster building contest. Unfortunately this year we didn’t come away with any prizes, however we would like to congratulate our 8th graders on their great work! On Monday, May 20th the 8th graders invite the student body to come and learn about their roller coasters, a physics project they have been working on for the past several weeks. We would also like to extend the invitation to our parents. Please feel free to drop in and see the many vertical loops, corkscrew turns and plunging drops on Monday, May 20th between 11 am - noon.

Sincerely,
Marie Fitzpatrick

STM Newsletter for May 1, 2013

Dear Parents:

Last Friday evening, Bishop McElroy administered the sacrament of confirmation to our seventh grade students. We congratulate them on their further initiation into the Catholic Church. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit continue to work in their lives. Thank you to seventh grade teacher, Natalia Girlich, and CCD Director Kathy Sanford for preparing such a prayerful and meaningful ceremony. Thank you also to our fabulous student choir, led by Shelley White. A special thank you also to the sixth grade families for their help setting and cleaning up at the confirmation reception.

During the Month of May, a month both named for and dedicated to Mary, Catholics have long honored Mary by placing a crown on her image. The tradition in the United States and many other countries has been for school children to have a "May Crowning" ceremony, with a procession, pretty dresses and a wreath of fresh flowers that are placed on the statue. This Sunday, May 5th, at 10:00am, we invite you all to join with the 2nd and 7th graders as they present the Family Mass and May Crowning.

The Parents’ Club meet at 7:00 in Carroll Hall tomorrow, Thursday, May 2nd. If you have not yet attended a meeting this year, now is a great time to participate and become involved in YOUR parents’ club.

Parent Agreement: If you have not yet turned in your parent agreement, please do so by this Friday, May 3rd. Please be aware that monthly tuition payment plans begin this month, and the 1st payment was due today. As a reminder, tuition payments may be mailed or given to your child to deliver to the school office via their Wednesday Envelope. Also, please consider mailing all tuition payments during the summer months as our office hours vary and we can’t guarantee that the office will be open during regular business hours.

Congratulations: We would like to congratulate the Sixth graders, and their teacher Miss Beach, on their magnificent production of YOLO – an opera they wrote in conjunction with the Books to Bravo program of the San Francisco Opera Guild. Photos and songs from the performance can be seen by clicking the link on the STM homepage. A job well done, sixth grade. This is our sixth year working with the Opera Guild and is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of our students.

Physics Day: This Friday, the eighth grade class will represent STM at Great America for Physics Day. The eight graders have been working on a rollercoaster physics project for the past several weeks. We are very proud of their creativity and workmanship as their rollercoaster’s have many vertical loops, corkscrew turns and plunging drops. Along with the 8th graders, we have four rollercoaster’s going to Great America this Friday to represent St. Thomas More School at Physics Day. We’re sure that the students will enjoy this educational opportunity.

Check out the flyer you are receiving today.

Thank you for all who took the time to acknowledge their teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are blessed to have such dedicated educators here at St. Thomas More School. A special thank you to the Parent's Club, especially Linda Shah and Jessica Ramirez, who prepared a special Teacher Appreciation lunch last week. Together we can help our children become thoughtful, spiritual individuals.
