Congratulations, STM Class of 2020!

In a speech to a recent graduating class at Kent State University, Olivia Spencer said, "the best years are very much ahead of you. And they can be whatever you want them to be… As much as you've changed during your time here, more change is coming".

This Friday we say farewell to our amazing 8th grade students as they graduate from St. Thomas More School. We are so very proud of all their accomplishments and we are confident that a bright future awaits them. Some of them enrolled in Utopia Preschool and have been with us for eleven years, the majority entered Kindergarten in 2012, and a few others joined the class along the way. All have contributed to making the Class of 2020 one we will remember fondly for years to come. Their graduation is going to be a little different from what many of them imagined, but we will celebrate their many achievements in a variety of ways. We will begin the celebration with a virtual graduation on this coming Friday, May 29. We hope to be able to have an in-person graduation in August to present diplomas and awards.

Dear Parents,

The question I am most often asked by you, our parents, is what our plans are for the Fall. First of all, let me reassure you, school will resume, as planned, on Tuesday, August 18th. What we don't know at this point is exactly what that will look like. We are praying that we can resume operations as normal, but that may not be the case. We are adhering to the guidelines issued by the CDC and are preparing several contingency plans to deal with various scenarios that may arise. It will probably be several more weeks before a final decision can be made.

In the meantime, we will prepare and plan for the 2020-2021 school year by making the safety of our students, faculty and staff our highest priority. To contribute to our preparations for the upcoming school year, please complete the Assessing Academic Programming 2020-2021 Parent Survey by Monday, June 1, 2020. We appreciate your feedback in evaluating our distance learning program, student workload and potential schedules. We will also survey the students and the teachers for additional information. The data we receive will inform and guide us as we prepare for the 2020-2021school year.

Camp Kinda - K-8 Virtual Summer Camp

View this email in your browser
Dear Parents,

Below is a free virtual summer camp opportunity for K-8 students. Check it out!

Camp Kinda (Espanol Camp Kinda) is a Virtual Summer Camp from some of the most innovative minds in online learning. Camp Kinda (Espanol Camp Kinda) will be available online for free to all families due to philanthropic support. It will provide approximately three to four hours of engaging free content per day to families around the country.

Camp Kinda Background Information:
Employees with school-age kids, who are still adapting to the rigors of quarantines and distance learning, will soon face an even more daunting problem: How to fill their children's wide-open summer vacation days once the online school year ends?

Here is a project from some of the most innovative minds in online learning, who aim to help parents answer that question. It's a virtual summer camp that will be available free to families called Camp Kinda. While nothing can replace the joys of an outdoor summer, Camp Kinda makes the best of what is possible: mixing fun and enriching activities, all of which are designed to put minimal strain on working parents.

The idea for Camp Kinda came from Tim Daly, who leads the well-regarded nonprofit Ed Navigator. Tim brings nearly two decades of experience in public education to this effort and an entrepreneurial orientation to address the needs of parents through partnerships with employers such as M.I.T. and Marriott Hotels.

This summer, Camp Kinda will provide approximately three to four hours of engaging free content per day to families around the country. Camp Kinda will be available online from June 1st to September 1st, 2020 for free due to philanthropic support. Families will need high-speed internet and a connected device to access the content.

For more information or to sign up, visit Camp Kinda's website at https://campkinda.org/welcome.

STM Newsletter for Wednesday, May 20, 2020

View this email in your browser

Dear Parents,

As we continue to shelter in place and work from home, emails, phone calls and even Zoom are no replacement for the regular face to face meetings that we take so for granted in our everyday lives. I miss seeing the bright smiling faces of your children every day, the chats with parents and grandparents at pick-up time, cups of tea and stories shared in the teacher's room. I imagine you are all missing social interactions, hanging out with friends, making plans to go places, as well as opportunities to celebrate and worship together.

In the March/April 2020 edition of the North Coast Catholic, an article by Julie Sparacio caught my eye. She talks about a curriculum used in many dioceses across the U.S. called Our Circle of Grace. Sparacio notes that "Our Circle of Grace, is that space that we inhabit as we navigate our way through the world. The most amazing and comforting part of that Circle of Grace is the knowledge that God is standing there, in that Circle, right next to us!" She continues to say that "Social distancing doesn't apply to God! He is sheltering in place right there with you!"

When your children are anxious do the following activity with them to remind them that God is always with them.

  • Raise your hands above your head
  • Bring your outstretched arms slowly down
  • Extend your arms in front of you, then behind you
  • Embrace all the space around you
  • Slowly reach down to your feet
  • God is in this space with you
  • This is your Circle of Grace.

Our 8th graders are quickly coming to the end of their school year and are preparing to graduate from STM!  We have worked through many different scenarios over the past few weeks as we planned their graduation; many plans had to be changed and adjusted with each new directive from the Public Health Department. However, they will graduate in style, and we will celebrate their many achievements in a variety of ways. We will have our first graduation celebration through Zoom on May 29 for our graduates and their immediate families. Graduates will be wearing their gowns, parents will be decorating homes and I hear that special family lunches are also in the plan. We will post a copy of the graduation video for all to enjoy afterwards. We very much hope that we can have a live graduation mass and award ceremony in early August, when it will be safer for us to gather in larger numbers.

Reminder, only a total of 2 halves should be played.

Each player may pause the game up to three times. Players can only pause the game when the ball is out of play or they have clear possession.

During the last tournament, we've had a few unsportsmanlike incidents where students talked badly about each other on the game chats. Please practice good sportsmanship in order to prevent any consequences where you could be taken out of the tournament.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Tabia Ye
SF CYO Athletics Coordinator
