October 28, 2020

Dear STM Families,

As Catholics, we begin November by remembering those who have died and gone before us, especially family members and friends. On All Saints Day and All Souls Day we remember that we are members of the People of God. United with God, we are also united with all Christians who have come before us in the Communion of Saints.

Fr. James Martin SJ, in this video describes the connections between the Saints and All Saints Day, including: canonization process, patron saints and highlights of various individual saints We call the first two days of November All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated November 2. On this day, it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Many people celebrate this day by visiting the graves of deceased loved ones and setting up altars with their favorite foods, drink, and photos.

STM STUDENTS RETURN FOR IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION

On Monday, November 2, we welcome back to campus many of our 3-6 grade students. Staggered drop-off has worked very effectively and efficiently for the past two weeks. However, TK-2 families can no longer arrive before 8:15am as that time is reserved for families of students in grades 3-6. Classes will begin promptly at the given time, so please be on time. Tardy slips will be given to any student who arrives later than their scheduled drop-off time.

Remember that families with students in multiple grades should drop all children at the drop-off time of the oldest student.

Travel Policy

As planning for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays begins we will be following the SFDPH's recommendation on travel to ensure the health and safety of our school community. Please keep this in mind as you make plans for family gatherings. We will provide recommendations and are in the process of developing plans to mitigate the spread of infection within our school community as we navigate our first major holiday season during this pandemic.

Social Media Education

The use of social media continues to grow, and we are all inundated with information both true and false. As parents, it is important that you educate our children from a young age to be media literate and to make informed judgements about the reliability of information. This link from Common Sense Education has some simple tips about how you can help your child develop their critical thinking skills.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION FOR
STM STUDENTS

Halloween will be celebrated with all our students on Thursday, October 29th.

Students in all grades may wear costumes whether on campus or at home. Our Parents' Club will be doing some spooky decorating outside the school gate and Class Representatives are organizing the preparation of individual goody bags for pick-up.

Please know that treats or any food items cannot be brought to school for sharing at any time. The staff also loves to receive treats, however, we will not be able to accept any gifts of food or any other items for sharing for the foreseeable future.

Students at school will be having their individual pictures taken by their teacher or aide. Students in TK-2 grade who are distance learning are invited to drive by school according to the following schedule. One parent may exit the vehicle to take a picture. Treats will be on a table nearby.

Grade                   Time

TK                    1:00 - 1:30pm

K                      1:00 - 1:30pm

1st                    1:45 - 2:10pm

2nd                   2:30 - 2:55pm

Students in 3-5 are scheduled to come at the following times:

Grade                   Time

3rd                    3:10 - 3:35pm

4th                    3:50 - 4:15pm

5th                    4:30 - 4:50pm

Grades 6-8 students are also invited to come by for pictures and treats. Please contact your parent class representative to let them know in advance if you plan to come. We need to ensure we have enough treats for everyone.

Siblings: Many families have one child in school and another at home for distance learning. If you wish to have photos taken together or to pick up a student early because you want to avoid extra trips to school please email your child's teacher to let them know in advance so they can plan accordingly. We kindly request that you leave as soon as you are finished in order to accommodate other families safely.

Teachers will adjust their afternoon schedules to accommodate students taking time off from zoom to come by for photos and treats. Perhaps they have some fun Halloween activities or videos to share!
