View this email in your browser Dear Friends, Just about everybody prays at some time or another. When we're in a tough spot, we're likely to pray more. Our faith teaches us that prayer is important and is a wonderful way we can connect to God. In light of recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has invited all dioceses across the country to unite in a Day of Prayer this Friday, September 9. We will ring the bell on Friday at noon so that we can come together as a community to prayer for peace. We hope to see everyone this Sunday, September 11, for one of the most important celebrations of the school year. Please join us for our Back-to-School Mass at 10:00. Come and share in the celebration as we begin a new year together at St. Thomas More School and Utopia Preschool. Following the Mass, there will be hospitality in Scanlon Hall. SANDWICHES-FOR-THE-NEEDY Our first sandwiches-for-the-needy collection is this Friday, September 9 with the 8th and kindergarten students taking the lead. We encourage all of you to consider making an extra sandwich (or more) and sending it to the office on that day. We have been asked to provide just one type of sandwich: turkey on sliced white or wheat bread. Please individually wrap the sandwiches (ziplock sandwich bags preferred). FUN RUN: Today we are sending home the FUN RUN Pledge Forms with every child. As per the financial policies, all K-8 families are required to participate in the Fun Run. Each family is to raise a minimum of $100 per child enrolled in the school. All pledge forms are due back to the classroom teachers by Monday, September 26. Extra forms are available from the office. Pledges can also be made online! K-8 families who do not wish to participate in this fundraiser will be charged (via FACTs) the $150 per child opt-out fee once all pledges have been collected. BOOK FAIR: This year we are lucky to have two Scholastic Book Faires! Our Fall Book Faire will take on a buccaneer theme and begin the week of September 19. Please visit our Book Faire in the library and say ahoy to Miss Judy and her many mateys. PIRATE DAY IS COMING!: Speaking of mateys! Talk like a Pirate Day is Monday, September 19. Students may wear pirate accessories with their uniforms (no weapons please). Students will be treated to a variety of fun pirate themed activities. Further information will be sent home next week. Arrrg! CHOICELUNCH Last week we wrote that students in grades K-3, who have ordered a Choicelunch, would receive the snack and fruit/veg that comes with the lunch in the classrooms earlier in the day so that they would have this for their morning snack. This worked so well we are now doing this with our 4-8 grade students. Enjoy the warm "summer" days!
