View this email in your browser Dear Friends, The feasts of saints are traditionally celebrated on the day of their death, because that is the date on which they entered into eternal life. There are only three people whose birthdays have traditionally been celebrated by Christians. Jesus Christ, at Christmas; Saint John the Baptist; and the Blessed Virgin Mary, as they were all born without Original Sin. The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day on which we commemorate the birth of Mary, the Mother of God, was celebrated as early as the sixth century. The traditional date of the feast, September 8, falls exactly nine months after the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. We celebrate this very important feast day, because it prepares the way for the birth of Christ.  BACK TO SCHOOL MASS We hope to see everyone this Sunday, September 9, for one of the most important celebrations of the school year. Please join us for our Back-to-School Mass at 10:00am. Come and share in the celebration as we begin a new year together at St. Thomas More School and Utopia Preschool. PARENTS' CLUB MEETING Friday, September 7, 7pm Carroll Hall NEW PARENT SOCIAL Friday, September 7, 7pm Carroll Hall SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Again this year we are lucky to have two Scholastic Book Fairs! Our Fall Book Fair will take on a fairy tale theme. The fair begins on September 7 and runs through September 13. Please visit our Book Fair in the library during the times below. Can't make it to the Book Fair? Shop online!  Friday, September 7 7:30-8:30 AM; and 2:15-3:15 PM Sunday, September 9 10:45 AM (After Family Mass) -12:15 PM Monday-Thursday; September 10-13 7:30-8:30 AM; and 2:45-3:30 PM FUN RUN Today we are sending home the FUN RUN Pledge Forms with every child. As per the financial policies, all TK-8 families are required to participate in the Fun Run. Each family is required to raise a minimum of $100 per child enrolled in the school. All pledge forms are due back to the classroom teachers by Monday, September 24. Pledges can also be made online! TK-8 families who do not wish to participate in this fundraiser, or who do not meet the minimum requirement, will be charged (via FACTS) the $150 per child opt-out fee once all pledges have been collected. BINGO 'NITE' Family Bingo 'Nite' is set for Saturday, September 22. This is a great opportunity to meet other families and get the new school year off to a great beginning. We hope to see you there! SANDWICHES-FOR-THE-NEEDY  Our first sandwiches-for-the-needy collection is this Friday, September 7, with the 7th and 1st graders taking the lead. We encourage all of you to consider making an extra sandwich and sending it to the office on that day. Here are a few guidelines to help with the distribution of sandwiches - In order to facilitate the distribution of sandwiches, we have been asked to provide just one type of sandwich: plain turkey on sliced white or wheat bread. Please individually wrap the sandwiches (ziplock sandwich bags). Sandwiches will be delivered to the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality on Potrero Ave. Their mission is to serve in the spirit of compassion, understanding and love and they provide breakfast and lunch during the week and brunch on Sunday to those in need in the community.
