SF Giants Filipino Heritage Night
If you zoom on the big screen, it says STM Broncos.

September 14, 2022

Hello STM Broncos!

It was so wonderful to see so many of you at the SF Giant's game on Filipino Heritage Night 2022! Thank you to all the families who helped organize and bring our community together.  It was so much fun!

There are many opportunities to get involved at STM! Activities are back and that means parents have the chance to create lasting memories with their kids and have fun – in person!  To be a volunteer chaperone and/or coach, don't forget to complete your Livescan and Virtus Training. Check in with your classroom teacher or the office for more information on how to get involved. Strength in Numbers!

Thank you to Music Will (formerly Little Kids Rock) for creating a wonderful opportunity for our students and families to meet world-class musicians.

Thank you, again, to all the families for keeping our students and families safe during drop-off.

We also want to thank Mrs. Wong for 12 years of dedication to STM. She will be moving on to spend more time with her family. She will be missed. Thank you to Thomas Boles and the Salesian Academy for joining our Bronco community and keeping all our technological needs current and updated.

Student quotes for the week:

"I have to leave this concert early to go home and study for my Science quiz."

  "I love to help."

We are all truly blessed to be part of such an amazing community!

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you soon!

God bless you all!

Peace, love, happiness, and harmony.

PARENT NOTIFICATION OF REVISED GRADING SCALE FOR GRADES 3-8

The Archdiocese of San Francisco has revised the elementary 3rd - 8th grading scale. Elementary schools will have two years to implement the newly revised grading scale. Before making this change, the archdiocese researched the local high school and public/private elementary grading scales. High School Admission Departments will no longer need to apply a norming formula to Catholic school applicant grades since all applicants will be on the universal grading scale.

For our students to immediately benefit from this new policy, St. Thomas More School will migrate to the revised grading scale in PowerSchool for grades 3-8 on the week of September 19, 2022. Parents and students will see the changes by the end of next week in their Parent Portal. Courses using the markings P/PN and 1-4 for conduct and behavior will not be affected by this change.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SCREENING OFFERED EACH FALL

Each year, St. Thomas More offers speech and language screening to selected students to ensure that communication skills are developing appropriately. The screening will be conducted on October 18 and 20 by a state-licensed, nationally certified speech-language pathologist using a standardized screening test. Classroom teachers identify students to participate in the screening. Children will be screened individually during the school day.

Appropriate development of a child's speech and language is very important to success with learning.  Communication is essential for academic development, peer interaction, and healthy self-esteem. The speech and language screening can help to identify possible issues with communication including:

  • Articulation – production of speech sounds
  • Receptive Language – ability to understand spoken language (i.e. meaning of words, follow directions, listen to stories and answer questions)
  • Expressive Language – ability to formulate spoken language (i.e. have a substantial vocabulary, use correct grammar and be able to formulate various sentences)
  • Fluency – rhythm of speech-language
  • Voice – quality of speech

Typically, children do not outgrow communication issues; therefore early identification and treatment are essential.

Parents will receive a written summary of the screening results, with recommendations for follow-up actions if appropriate.

If you have any questions about the speech and language screening at STM, contact learning specialist, Skye Scarbrough at sscarbrough@stmsf.org

FUN RUN
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2022

The St. Thomas More School Fun Run is an exciting program that promotes fitness and healthy habits, as well as being one of our main fundraisers for this school year. Students will be running and walking laps (about 30 minutes) on September 23rd and asking friends, family, and coworkers for donations over the next couple of weeks. This is going to be a blast!!

Everyone including staff, students, and families is working hard to make this a huge success. Family and friends from around the globe can support our school by making a donation in support of your student.  Let's make this the most successful fundraiser ever!!

We can't reach our goal without you! Your generous support is appreciated!

Thank you from everyone at St. Thomas More School!
