CIOPPINO FUN FACTS
● Cioppino is a fish stew that originated in San Francisco! ● It was developed in the late 1800s by Italian immigrants who lived in North Beach and fished at the nearby wharf ● It is traditionally made from the catch of the day - crab, clams, shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels, and fish - combined with fresh tomatoes and wine ● When fisherman came back empty-handed, they would walk around with a pot to other fisherman, asking them to "chip in" whatever they could - hence the name "cioppino" (derived from ciuppin, a classic Italian soup) ● Toasted sourdough bread (another San Francisco tradition!) may be dipped into the sauce ● "Cioppino" was first used in 1906 in The Refugee's Cookbook, a fundraising effort to help San Franciscans displaced by the 1906 earthquake and fire.
