STM Newsletter for February 7, 2018

Dear Parents:

Ash Wednesday, which this year is next Wednesday, February 14, marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. Lent is a time when we prepare as a faith community to meet the risen Christ at Easter. It is a time for us to turn away from what keeps us from living the Gospel, and to remind ourselves that we are called to lives rooted in justice. To be just in the biblical sense is to be in a right relationship with God. Over the 40 days of Lent, we pray for a change of heart towards greater love of God and each other as we share our food, our wealth and our time with others in need. May the Holy Spirit give us the strength to act justly, the courage to love tenderly and the faith to walk humbly with our God, as we prepare for the resurrection of Jesus at Easter time.

Yesterday, Mr. Mike from the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) visited with the students to let them know about the important work MCA is doing in the Philippines. MCA stresses children helping children. The children learned they could help missionaries do Jesus' work by praying for them and by sharing their resources. Please ask your children about how they might help others during Lent. Next week students will receive Lenten boxes to aid them in sharing their resources with MCA so that their missionaries can continue their good work in the world.
GRANDPARENTS DAY
Thank you to John Kavanagh, Rory McKillion and Kathleen Byrne who organized a great Grandparents and Special Friends Day and to everyone who made it such a success! The children were so happy to have over 150 special guests join us for this fun event. A HUGE thank you also to the many other parent volunteers who pitched in to make the day run so smoothly.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR!
Thank you to everyone who visited our book fair last week! With your help we raised $2,891 in Scholastic dollars to be used to buy books for our library. A big thank you to Maria Kagehiro, Rose Lee and Tatum Mothershead and their fantastic crew of parents who volunteered both before and after school throughout the week.
Finally, congratulations to the following students who raised the most in their class for the spell-a-thon: Russell Nguyen (K), Gavin Rivera (1st), Matthew Sunga (2nd), Elizabeth Alvarado (3rd), Brady Curran (4th), Benny Davila (5th), Darby Curran (6th), Mia Madamba (7th), and Santino Woo (8th). These students will be receiving their free dress pass tomorrow. The highest fundraiser in the school was Brady Curran (4th) and the class that raised the most funds, and winners of a free dress day and the popcorn and movie party, is 4th grade. This year the spell-a-thon raised just over $11,000. Funds raised will be used to replace and upgrade our entire WIFI network. We are also happy to report that 69 students are receiving a certificate today for being the top spellers in their class. Congratulations and thank you again to everyone who participated.

As a system default, art, PE, music and tech will show P/100% for students who fully participate. Students in grades K-2 with behavior and/or academic concerns have already been contacted by their child's teacher.
