The Miraculous Medal, also known as the Medal of Our Lady of Graces, is a devotional medal. This means it helps us remember our devotion to God, through the person in the medal. In 1830 Mary, our Blessed Mother appeared to Sr. Catherine Laboure and asked her to make a medal with a very specific design. Mary spoke to Catherine, saying, "Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around their neck." According to the Association of the Miraculous Medal, the blessings that Mary promised "began to shower down" on wearers of the medal. The devotion spread rapidly. In 1836, a Church investigation declared the apparitions to be genuine. Since this time devotion to the Miraculous Medal has spread the world over. Recently, a generous benefactor donated Miraculous Medals to all children attending Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. These were blessed by Archbishop Cordileone at St. Mary's Cathedral on August 6, 2019 and given to all principals for distribution to our students. This week the students and teachers are learning about this wonderful medal. Following Mass this coming Friday, 9/13, Fr. Marvin will again bless these medals and they will be presented to the teachers in grades 1-8 for distribution to their students. All are welcome to join us for this special presentation. Medals are on a chain and may be worn by students inside their shirts at school. Please remind your children that this medal is not a toy and should be worn and treated with respect at all times. Lastly, we'd like to welcome one more staff member on board - Caroline McCabe. Ms. McCabe will be the classroom aide for our transitional kindergarten. Sincerely, Marie Fitzpartick Principal |
