| | Newsletter for Wednesday, March 3, 2015 Dear Parents, As we enter our third week of Lent, it is a good time to help children be more kind and loving to others. Children are naturally loving, but they can get into really bad habits of fighting with brothers and sisters or being disobedient or even talking back. Lent is a great time to build in some family practices, which will stay with you long after the Lenten season is over. Children will notice, if part of your Lenten journey is to choose to 'fast' from crabby-ness or busy-ness and to spend more time with them. Children will notice, if you set the example of choosing to compliment others in the family more, highlighting the good things you notice in them. If your family Lenten practice is to focus on being nicer, kinder and more generous in helping each other, your children will take part in it. If we fail on a given day, we can quickly apologize and ask forgiveness and model more loving behavior that is central to Lent. By doing these simple acts, your children will benefit immensely during this important time of the church calendar. Family Mass: Please join us this Sunday, March 8th for our next Family Mass. Thank you to our third and fifth grade families for taking the lead in this Mass beginning at 10:00am. See you there! Cioppino: Cioppino 2015 is history! What a wonderful event. Thank you to all who supported the event in any way. There were over 400 diners and countless volunteers for set up, the event itself, and clean up. It was so impressive to stop by the night before during set up and see the beehive of activity with dozens of people working to prepare for the big night…a wonderful involved community of school parents and alumni parents. Thank you to Anarose Schelstrate and Linda Shah for once again chairing this great event. Thank you also to the cioppino committee made up of April Dominguez, Jessica Ramirez, Carol Schivo, Judy Silva, Zodine Spiegel, Shelley White, and Val Willsea, who worked tirelessly to secure auction items and make baskets. Congratulations to head chef, Robert Maldonado and his wonderful crew, for catering such a scrumptious meal. A special thank you also to Boy Scout Troop 343 for donating their time to assist with parking and serving dinner. | | Thursday, March 12th Mandatory Parent Meeting, 7pm Gym | | | Friday, March 20th End of 3rd Quarter Report Cards go home on Friday, March 27th | | Thursday, March 26th Spring Show Preschool-3rd 1:30pm 4th-8th 7:00pm | | | Saturday, March 28th Father-Daughter Dinner Dance | | April 3rd-12th Easter Break - No School | | | SAVE THE DATE! Complete and return the form you received last week if you wish to order. LAYETTE DRIVE: We are collecting new infant clothing through the month of March. These items will be donated to the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) to benefit needy mothers and their newborns throughout the year. The items will be distributed throughout local centers such as Alpha Pregnancy Center, Holy Family Day Home, and Seton Pregnancy Center to name a few. Please send any donation with your child or drop them off in the bins at the front office. Your generosity to needy moms and babies is greatly appreciated. MANDATORY PARENT MEETING: We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00pm for a mandatory parent meeting for all families of preschool through 8th grade. This is a mandatory meeting for all parents. At least one parent from each family is required to attend. While it would be ideal if children could stay at home, we understand this is not always possible. Childcare for younger children enrolled at STM will be available in Carroll Hall at no cost. Please click here to make a reservation for childcare. We will begin the meeting in the gym promptly at 7:00pm. Please arrive early enough to sign in with your child/ren's teacher/s so that you may receive a raffle ticket. One lucky attending family will win free re-registration for one child. Be on time! The raffle will take place at 7:00pm sharp. At this meeting we will hear from Matt Devine, the consultant who helped us prepare our Emergency Operations Plan. This plan is designed to provide a framework for the actions to be taken by school staff for protecting students, staff and school facilities from a wide range of emergency and disaster situations that may occur. Finally, congratulations to the following students who raised the most in their class for the spell-a-thon: Xavier Coleman (K), Gabrielle Remo (1st), Marquez Beasley-Bell (2nd), Stella de Guzman (3rd), Isabel Sanchez (4th), Isabella Brenes (5th), Zach White (6th), Kailey Solorzano (7th), and Olivia Del Rosario (8th). These students will be receiving a certificate today and will receive their prize money tomorrow. The highest fundraiser in the school was Isabel Sanchez (4th) and the class that raised the most funds, and winners of a pizza party, is 6th grade. The spell-a-thon raised almost $12,000 (that's $1000 more than last year!). We are also happy to report that 47 students are also receiving a certificate for getting 100% correct on their spell-a-thon. Congratulations and thank you again to everyone who participated. Funds will be used to purchase and mount projectors and Apple TV's for the primary grades. Don't forget to get up early and set your clocks ahead at 2:00am on Sunday, March 8, or even better, set them ahead on Saturday night. And while you are at it, change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Sincerely, Marie Fitzpatrick Principal | | | | | | |
