STM Newsletter for October 9, 2019

View this email in your browser

Dear Parents,

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Holy Rosary because the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. Praying the rosary is a way to help us get in touch with Mary, the Mother of God, and to develop a relationship with her. We all have needs, so we can implore Mary's help and seek her motherly protection and intercession together. Use the words of Pope Francis (above) as a model for your child's prayer in life.

FAMILY MASS
Please join us on Sunday, October 20, for our next Family Mass. Thank you to our fourth grade families for taking the lead in this Mass beginning at 10:00am. See you there!

CONFERENCES FEEDBACK
Following parent conferences, one common thread the faculty identified was the lack of time that students spend reading on a daily basis. Many parents expressed that children tend to spend more time with their devices and less and less time reading. We have also noticed that while our math scores on the STAR test continue to improve each year, reading scores remain stagnant or show a decline in some grades. It is sometimes difficult for families to find the right balance between screen time and other important areas like reading and outside play time. However, it is critical that all students, Preschool through 8th grade, spend some time reading each day. This can be a print book or an ebook. This ensures that they become proficient readers with an ever increasing vocabulary and highly developed comprehension skills.  Time when you read to your child and discuss content is also very important to developing good reading habits. This article from Common Sense Media have some helpful suggestions that may be useful to your family.
Summerbridge a full-time summer academic enrichment session and a school-year academic program for middle school students. Students attend the six-week summer session over three consecutive summers and spend two years with Summerbridge during the school year. For the safety of our children please follow the following traffic directions:
  • Do not make U-turns. Please drive around the church instead.
  • Do not double park, even if it's a quick drop-off or pick-up.
Please be respectful and courteous to our neighbors at the Golf Club, St. Thomas More Church and Alma Via. We all need to share the valuable and limited parking spaces.

Have a fantastic long weekend!
